Kerensa DeMars
Ms.DeMars was captivated by the art of Flamenco while earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the San Francisco Art Institute. With a background in ethnic dance forms (Middle Eastern, Butoh) and a keen interest in anthropological dance studies, she was soon embedded in the San Francisco Flamenco scene. Her profound passion for Flamenco led her to Madrid in 1997 where she caught the eye of the renowned world music group Radio Tarifa and toured with them as a featured dancer through 2003. In those six years she continued intensive Flamenco studies with some of Spain’s foremost Flamenco artists. Kerensa’s explosive, expressive presence on stage, a mélange of tradition and Moorish influenced stylings, marks the continuing evolution of a very passionate and learned interpreter of the soulful emotions that bring Flamenco to life.
Upon her return to San Francisco in 2004 Kerensa became Artistic Director of the Flamenco Room, a weekly Flamenco show featuring local, national and international Flamenco artists. The Flamenco Room, now in its sixth year, has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner and the Mercury News and continues to be recognized for the consistently high quality of the performances and the presentation of several outstanding international artists. In addition to her work with the Flamenco Room, Kerensa presents performances via Querencia Productions. She recently presented her new work ENLACES, a fusion of Flamenco, Indian and Arabic dance in Madrid (May 2009) and in Paris (October 2009.) Kerensa performed in the 2009 summer season with the Juan Siddi Flamenco Theater Company and is in her fifth season as a company member of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco. In July 2010 Kerensa will present ZAHARA, a fusion of Flamenco and Moroccan music and dance at the Cowell Theater in San Francisco and the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
Kerensa has been a featured performer on London’s BBC 3 and BBC 4 and Madrid’s Televisión Española. She has toured internationally performing at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican Center of London, the Teatro Calderón of Madrid, the Tivoli Theater in Barcelona, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Cowell Theater, Palace of Fine Arts and Fillmore Theater and the Hothouse in Chicago. She has had the good fortune to share the stage with many outstanding artists from around the globe and continues to be inspired by the magic of Flamenco and the incredible international community of artists who follow their passion.
